  • Instant access to patches, documentation, and more.
  • Built-in RSS and Twitter updates direct from Support.
  • Live peer to peer chat lets you ask for help from other VMware experts and staff. (the chats are pretty interesting to watch)
  • Custom search capabilities.
  • Works on IE, Firefox, Safari.

Understanding VMware Disk Alignment

I've recently spent quite a bit of time trying to understand the reasons and importance of Disk Alignment in an ESX environment,  Is it important? What are the best ways to correct it and how do you prevent misalignment in the first place. With all that being said I ran into a couple of great articles that describe the subject in great detail. Here they are:

The first article was written by Erik Zandboer from VMdamentals. He published a series on Disk Throughput and in part 3 he describes misalignment in great detail and goes through different methods to correct it. It's a great primer to help understand what's under the covers.

Two other articles  Recommendations for Aligning VMFS Partitions and Performance Tuning Best Practices for ESX Server 3 were written by VMware. They are  a typical white papers from VMware but do a good job going over the subject. They also go over Best Practices for Storage which I found useful.

The last source is a book that I had the opportunity to read. NetApp and VMware vSphere - Storage Best Practices . I highly recommend it. The book only cost $15.00 and it really does cover the topic well. It also goes over NetApp in great detail for those that are running NetApp shops. tips, tricks and gotchas in a NetApp world ..... Great resource.

Happy Reading - Scott March

VCDX Brown Bag

Cody Bunch from ProfessionalVMware started a series of Webinars called VCDX Brown Bags. I had the opportunity to participate in VCDX Brown Bag #4 : DRS Clusters and Performance Monitoring today. It was an hour long Open Webinar going over DRS, ESXTOP, ESX Monitoring and other topics VMware related. Participants were encouraged to openly discuss these topics or any other topic they might be having issues with.

Cody did a great job and his efforts are definitely appreciated! If you have any intention of pursuing the VCP or VCDX, I highly recommend participating in one of his future Brown Bag webinars.

IP Address Already Assigned to Another Adapter - Dreaded Ghost NIC!

I ran into my one of my old friends again while upgrading Virtual Machine Hardware on a VM from Rev4 to Rev7:

The IP address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another adapter Name of adapter. Name of adapter is hidden from the network and Dial-up Connections folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a legacy adapter that is not working. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and they become active, only one of them will use this address. This may result in incorrect system configuration. Do you want to enter a different IP address for this adapter in the list of IP addresses in the advanced dialog box?

Ghost NICs!! I figured it would be worth posting the steps for folks that haven't ran across one of these yet or just plain forgot how to deal with one so here you go:

New VMware Certifications

VCP+, VCP Master, VCP Expert? So what are the new "advanced certs" going to be called and what are we going to have to do to earn them. Hmmmm. There are many rumors floating around and we all have been patiently waiting for the news. Well it looks like things might actually be happening soon! I just finished reading a post off of Scott Vessey's Blog Vmware Training and Certification and found some great news. For those that don't know Scott's work - Scott is a Certified VMware Instructure and one the BEST references for VMware Certification info on the web. This is what he had to say:

I have a few snippets of news on some of the new certifications coming from VMware for vSphere 4, I am only allowed to say a limited amount at the moment, VMware will be making an official announcement in the coming weeks ahead of the release of these new certifications and their component exams.

On top of the existing foundation level VCP4 certification, there will be three new certifications for vSphere 4:
  • Enterprise Administrator Certification *
  • Design Administrator Certification *
  • VMware Certified Design Expert on vSphere 4 (VCDX4)
* Final name still to be confirmed

I know when VMware plan to announce these certifications officially, and I also know when the relevant exams are due to be released, but due to confidentiality I can't say any more than the above at the moment...

I shall certainly be signing up to take at least one of the above certifications when they become available!

This is great news! Thanks Scott for keeping us up to date.

HP Insight Control integration with VMware vCenter Server

HP announced the integration of HP Insight Control with VMware vCenter. Now you can manage your host hardware directly from VCenter. Very Nice! Here are some highlights from the HP site:

The HP Insight Control extension for VMware vCenter Server delivers powerful HP hardware management capabilities to virtualization administrators, enabling comprehensive monitoring, remote control and power optimization directly from the vCenter console. In addition, Insight Control delivers robust deployment capabilities and is an integration point for the broader portfolio of infrastructure management, service automation and IT operations solutions available from HP. Key capabilities integrated into the vCenter console include:

  • Combined physical and virtual view: From a single pane of glass, monitor status and performance of virtual machines and the underlying host systems that support them.
  • Integrated troubleshooting: Receive prefailure and failure alerts on HP server components and invoke HP management tools, such as Systems Insight Manager and Onboard Administrator, in-context, directly from the vCenter console
  • Powerful Remote Control: Remotely manage and troubleshoot HP ProLiant and BladeSystem servers using HP Integrated Lights Out Advanced capabilities directly from the vCenter console.
  • Proactive power management: Get the most out of your existing power envelope by comprehending and proactively managing power for hosts and pools of virtual machines across hosts
